N-Scale Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision
Panama
Приєднався 23 бер 2014
On this channel, I share with you the process of building and operating my N-scale Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision layout. I do this because I believe one of the best things about the hobby of model railroading is how we model railroaders can interact with each other on UA-cam in order to share our knowledge and experience with each other..
I started to plan my layout in February 2014. A month later in March, I launched this UA-cam channel . In April, I actually began to build the layout. Since then, I have been "working" on my layout and sharing my progress with you on this channel..
The prototype U.P. Evanston Subdivision runs from Green River, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah.

A year ago, I changed the trackplan at the west end of Echo Canyon on my N-scale layout. Now, I'm working on new scenery in this same area of my model railroad. In doing this, will I be able to capture the feel of the real Echo Canyon in Utah? That's what I'm going to show you in this and upcoming videos. We miss and love you Roy. I'm glad you got to go to the festival again and spend that time with your son and daughter in law.
I don't do N scale as I do HO & 027 Lionel. I use tire weights I get from Harbor Freight in 1/4 & 1/2 oz. which I hide under the loads of my gondolas & flatcars. I only use metal wheels and body mounted Kadee couplers for HO. Cheers from eastern TN
Hello Sir, I too started out my Love for Model Railroading. 64yrs ago my 1st Train Set is the Lionel Super-Chief on Christmas Day 1960. The set never grew up because the set only came out during the Holiday Season and then when the season ended I would put it back in its own box. The set still is in mint condition. The reason I chose N-Scal is because of space, but I don't know which way to go when it comes to picking the best and most reliable track for my future layout. like what is the best way to go if it's Kato Unitrack vs flex track with the least amount of replacing the track because of defects like bad turnouts and keeping the track clean. Did you make in the last 10yrs any videos in the form of How-to's, Reviews & Tips on the questions I asked about? By the way I'm starting from the beginning of your video library to see by taking lots of notes so I can learn how to do things. Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan
Hi Roy, before you constructed the helix, did your line just run from the lower level through the Eastern Helix to the top and just dead-end at the bottom and top layers, or did you have a reversing loop of some sort on each level allowing a train to move continuously?
PS - I love that open helix design, and I hope I will have the space to do the same when the time comes to start again on my own layout.
Love seeing dad's videos on UA-cam. Hard to believe this was only a year ago.
I definitely like the open oval helix design. Seems like a more effective setup and gives you a great opportunity for more scenery.
Roy we miss You! Your videos are very enticing for the ones like myself who really enjoyed learning Your RR modeling techniques! Hoping You're alright and well! So please come back soon! RR.-
One limitation with Kato Unitrack is the limited number of lengths (of straight sections) and angles (of curved sections), however it's possible to remove a piece of molded roadbed from the middle of a section, then slide one of the remaining pieces of roadbed to touch the other remaining piece, and then trim the rails to create a custom section. After leaving the hobby for 15 years, I'm experimenting with HO Unitrack for a shelf layout, but as of 2024, HO still only has one crossing angle available (90 degrees), which is annoying.
They don't look realistic either. Never seen one "in the wild". To me, it highlights lack of proper planning and a big mis-use of space.
Roy. Hope all is well with you
Wonder where the wife went after “she initially was helping him out”…?
Enjoyed this fun and informative video. I'm late to the party but I'm wondering if you eventually changed your #6 turnouts to #4 turnouts and if so, how did it turn out?
Great video and very informative! Glad YT recommended this video, subbed.
Roy, your videos have become my encyclopedia, having just started in the hobby. N scale btw. I'm wondering how you know which coupler length is best for which car? How do you know what truck set for which car? I see so many different types.
I hope you have people telling you that you are actually pretty cool from time to time. You spread not just knowledge but good vibes as well. Thanks for the video and the information, appreciate it a lot!
Is there anybody out there who has an “N Scale Wheeling and Lake Erie SD40-2 locomotive”? So hard to find but I’m dying to have 2 of them for a layout based off my hometown. (PLEASE HELP)
Does anybody know where I can find an “N Scale Wheeling and Lake Erie Sd40-2 Locomotive”? It’s next to impossible to find. I’m trying to get two of them. (Please Help)
How is Roy doing?? No update
I’ve been wondering how Roy is doing myself. There hasn’t been any news or updates.
I’ve been praying for him. Hopefully we hear something soon
@@williambahr9747 they say no news is good news, however in this case I think it’s the opposite, you’d think we would have heard something, it’s been six months.
I have the same feeling but I’m just hoping he’s just on the road to recovery fingers crossed
@@williambahr9747 I’m hoping to see Roy again soon, I always enjoyed his personable easy going style to his videos. Seemed like a genuinely nice fellow.
Thanks so much for pointing out the issues, when utilizing a helex. (I've been strongly tempted to utilize a helex, but I think I'm going to live with two Separate levels, or use a regular long incline, with just one or two helex loops). Thank you so much for your feedback on this topic!
Sounds you made a trip to my region. I live just west of Manassas VA near Bealton VA and am working on an HO basement layout which is about 15x36 feet roughly based on the D&RGW Grand Junction area and westward (era: late 70's thru early 80's). My problem is having enough time to get to the point of this layout. I am collecting a roster of N scale rolling stock because I expect to downsize in another 5 years or so. In the meantime work progresses in my basement - I have a blog of sorts on the AtlasRescueForum in the Project Archive section. Enjoyed viewing this video! Cheers.
I am back again. Prayers and caring are coming to you from my prayer group.
Really appreciate your honest assessment of helixes, and making this video.
Thank you for pointing out the issues with helixs as you set lift out mountain, maybe removable plexiglass windows to be able to reach in.
Roy my friend! It's been a very long time You don't post a video! Hope You're Alright and come back with Your great insights and RR Modeling expertise! Cheers, RR.-
Love the layouts, thank you
I don't like helixes either. I've belonged to many HO clubs that have helixes, and they have their issues to be sure. The best option I've seen is a combination where you use a twisting incline as part of the scenicked portion of the layout until the incline gets about halfway up to the upper level then use just a couple turns of the helix to get onto the upper level.
Amazing layout and locomotive/car collection. A bit excessive to collect that much rolling stock but everyone has to have at least once vice in life. Interestingly his wife helped him at the beginning - wonder why she stopped. 😁

Can't Todd talk?
I do not like helixes either and there won’t be one in my layout. I am about to build a new HO layout in a designated train / plane room. My layout will be 14.5’ X 5’ wilt two 5’ X 4.5’ additional sections attached at one end flush against the wall and the other section attached 2’ from the other end wall. This will form a U shaped layout with one end displaced by 2’ to accommodate a window in the room. The layout will represent the Texas & Pacific Railway in the early 1950s. It is the RR I hired out on as a fireman in 1973. It is now the southeastern terminus of the UP. There will be mountains on the west end and swamps on the east end. Hopefully I can find a location for a small airport. I’m hoping to depict the Huey P. Long Bridge over the Mississippi River with aerial pictures I took in 1984 with the SP 8444 Daylight coming across for the worlds fair.
now know why can't n scale people him buy it all
Has anyone done a model railway train elevator? That should address the noted downsides of the helix.
ua-cam.com/video/aLHESUpgKv8/v-deo.html
@@Jeff-hw8is That seems a bit too complex, and also wouldn't suit the length of US trains. Another problem with elevators, is that instead of just driving the train to the destination, you have to drive the train onto the elevator, switch to the elevator controls, move the elevator and then switch back to the train.
mix of both
At first I found this beautiful layout to be inspiring. Then I realized one would need to be a Millionaire to afford such a thing, and my thoughts of enthusiasm quickly turned to despair. Now I have to go back to my 4x10x5 garage layout with One Locomotive and Four coal hoppers
I am new here, but i hope his family puts out an update to let us know if he is still with us or not.... Either way, praying for you.
Nice.

You got a train set Todd
There is a lot of n scale DCC trains with lead. Is it just the decoders? Its not the shell? Is It?
